Easter 2025 falls on April 20, yes, 4:20, for those who appreciate the humor in that. For parents like me, Easter is all about creating fun, magical memories for our kids, without adding a bunch of junk to our already cluttered homes.

This Easter basket edit is for grade school kids, but if your littles are babies, I also have a blog on Baby’s First Easter Basket.

Check out my Easter Basket Edit – Kids Edition, on Amazon for hand-picked options that are fun, practical, and reusable.

If you're anything like me, you're constantly battling the accumulation of tiny, useless toys from birthday party gift bags, school events, and other holidays. Instead of letting Easter become another excuse for consumer mayhem, I focus on quality over quantity when shopping for Easter baskets and fillers.

That means reusable, practical Easter baskets that double as storage after the holiday. Biodegradable Easter grass (or skipping the filler altogether.) Toys and gifts my child will actually use and enjoy. Think books, sneakers, LEGO sets, stuffed animals, and card games. Things I’d buy for him anyway but packaged up as an exciting Easter surprise.

Why My Approach to Easter Baskets Changed

Growing up in rural Vermont, we had plenty of storage space, so my parents kept a dedicated set of Easter baskets and plastic eggs that came out every year. Now that I’m a mom raising a six-year-old boy in a space-conscious home, I take a minimalist, intentional approach to Easter baskets. Instead of buying something that only gets used once a year, I opt for multi-purpose storage baskets and gifts that are both fun and functional.

This post is focused on kids in kindergarten through third grade—age-appropriate Easter gifts that are practical, engaging, and fun.

Best Easter Baskets for Kids

I keep Easter baskets simple and practical with two great options:

  • Customizable Easter Baskets – Add your child’s name for a personalized touch. I got one for my son when he was a baby, and I reuse it every single year. These are durable and double as toy storage after Easter.

  • Easter-Themed Storage Bins – A functional and clutter-free option. These bins come in soft Easter colors and can be used for toy storage, books, or even laundry long after the holiday is over.

Easter Basket Filler Ideas

You can go all out with biodegradable Easter grass or skip the filler altogether. A small blanket or socks can serve as a practical, eco-friendly alternative while adding a nice base to the basket. Here are four great Easter basket fillers if you want to add a little extra fluff.

Classic Toys That Won’t End Up in the Trash:

  • Slinky – A timeless toy that never gets old.

  • Etch A Sketch – Keeps kids entertained without a screen.

  • Play-Doh – Always a win for creativity.

  • LEGO Creator 3-in-1 Sets – My personal favorite. These sets keep my son occupied for an hour, and he’s always proud when he completes them without help.

Books That Grow with Your Child

I always include a book in my son’s Easter basket. We’ve had some of these since he was an infant, and he still enjoys them now that he’s six, and he’s even starting to read them himself.

Pro tip: Write a note inside the book from the Easter Bunny with the year, it makes for a great keepsake.

Practical Easter Gifts: Shoes, Socks, Hats & Pajamas

Instead of spending money on Easter outfits, my son refuses to wear, I include everyday essentials like:

  • Sneakers (because he’s going to need them anyway)

  • Hats (great for summer)

  • Fun pajamas

  • Socks you can use these instead of easter grass for basket filler
